Our Fifth Chapter in August Wilson's Century Cycle

by August Wilson, directed by Bob Devin Jones
Seven Guitars
January 20 - February 26, 2012

“Vivid…engrossing…impeccable…The title refers to the seven characters, each given at least one sizzling solo, such as Floyd's rendition of The Lord's Prayer, a mesmerizing performance by [Joshua] Reese.” –John Fleming, Tampa Bay Times

“A beautifully realized production… an evocative set design… veteran actors [Alan Bomar Jones and Kim Sullivan] were infectiously dynamic… as Hedley, he [Ron Bobb-Semple], let the crazy build slowly.”  –Kathy L. Greenberg, Tampa Tribune

"Wilson is celebrating life itself ... you find yourself feeling privileged merely to watch and hear these men and women ... Each of these actors [Tia Jemison, Alan Bomar Jones, Kim Sullivan, and Ron Bobb-Semple], directed brilliantly by Bob Devin Jones, brings us mystery and majesty, joie de vivre and profound suffering, and when they’re done, the only appropriate response is gratitude. And awe ... Seven Guitars is the work of a great artist, and this production — with its dazzling ensemble acting — is always up to its demands ... Kudos to American Stage for bringing us the Wilson cycle. And accolades to everyone involved in this triumph." Mark E. Leib, Creative Loafing

“A play whose epic proportions and abundant spirit remind us of what the American theater once was.”
New York Times

Floyd Barton is a natural musician with a hit song and, in the expansive atmosphere after World War II, he dreams of the big time. But as the play begins, his wife and friends mourn his death. In Wilson’s only play constructed in flashback, Seven Guitars takes us back to explore what happened. Who killed Floyd Barton, but more importantly, why?

Mature subject matter and language.
